Time Magazine Cover - What Makes a School Great?Last week, TIME Magazine published its annual national service cover story. The story is dedicated to the vital need to improve public education and calls on Americans to help improve educational outcomes in low income communities by serving as teachers, serving with City Year and other high impact national service programs and donating to organizations dedicated to improving our nation’s schools.

City Year salutes TIME Magazine for its deep commitment to promoting national service. In 2008, City Year – as a convener of ServiceNation, a coalition of 110 organizations – joined with TIME to co-organize a presidential candidate forum and a summit on service. The ServiceNation Summit and the Voices for National Service coalition, of which City Year is a member, helped drive the development of what became the Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act, which authorized a dramatic expansion of service programs. Following the ServiceNation Summit, TIME Magazine’s Managing Editor Rick Stengel announced that TIME Magazine will dedicate an annual cover story each fall to national service in America.
